Unpaid family carers can play a vital role in the lives of those with advanced melanoma. Your carer may be a family member – such as your spouse, partner, child, parent, grandparent or sibling – or you may have a friend who has stepped into this role.
Caring for someone who is unwell from treatment side effects or as a consequence of the disease can be both physically and emotionally challenging and there is often little “down time” for carers to have a break or to socialise in the same way as others. It is important that carers look after their own health and well-being and receive emotional support around the issues facing their loved ones.
There are support services to assist your carer in their caring role, including:-
- Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centres
- Carers Australia
- Centrelink Carer Payment and /or Carer Allowance
