How To Fundraise

If you’ve never held a community fundraiser before it can seem a little daunting. To help you get the most out of your fundraiser we’ve outlined a few simple steps for you to get started.

1. Decide on a fundraising idea

Choose something that you like doing and that will be easy and fun for others to get involved. It can be as impressive as setting yourself a physical goal or as simple as a lolly guessing competition. Think about the resources and time you have available to you and what you’re willing to commit to. Remember that every fundraising effort helps. If you’re feeling stuck we’ve made a list of ideas, otherwise your only limit is your imagination.

2. Fundraising guidelines

Make sure you are aware of the rules and regulations surrounding fundraising particular to your state or territory. If you’re planning on holding an event like a gala you’ll need to check if you need insurance or local council permissions. If you want to hold a raffle, there are certain state-based regulations you have to follow.

3. Seek approval to fundraise

Once you’ve decided on your fundraising activity and have checked the requirements for holding it in your state or territory, you’ll have to contact us with your Fundraising Proposal. We’ll review your proposal and if successful we will send you an Authority to Fundraise letter within two weeks. You won’t be able to start fundraising until you receive that letter from us.

4. Set up your page

An easy way to manage your fundraiser is by setting up a JustGiving page. You can personalise your page with pictures and your story to make it more engaging, and then copy the URL to link on social media and in emails. The donations will be sent directly to us so you won’t have to worry about handling money, and your supporters will receive a tax receipt immediately.

5. Invite people

Once you’ve got everything set up you can start inviting people to come to your event or donate. Engage your network by emailing and sharing to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Don’t forget to include a link to your fundraising page and ask people to share.

Tips for fundraising

  • Be the first to donate. Showing how committed you are encourages others to donate to your cause.
  • Access your local network. Your family and friends are the people most likely to help you, especially if it’s something you’re passionate about.
  • Set yourself a target. This can be a great motivator not only for you but for your supporters as well.
  • Don’t be shy about sharing. Social media is an easy way to get your message out.
  • Write about your motivations for fundraising, people respond well to personal stories.
  • Posts with pictures tend to gather more attention so get creative with something that will be eye-catching.
  • Remember to say thank you to the people who support you! Let them know how much you appreciate their donation and how it will help others.
