John Alexander (Dry July 2017)

Tell us a little about yourself, including how melanoma has impacted your life.

I was first diagnosed with Melanoma in April 2015, to be honest I had no idea what Melanoma was and how dangerous it could be. I had a reoccurrence in December 2015 where it had spread to my lymph nodes. My right axillary nodes were removed and I was diagnosed as Stage 3. I had 20 doses of radiation in February 2016 and entered a clinical trial for Keytruda in March 2016. Unfortunately in July 2016 I had another re-occurrence in my back and was taken out of the trial. Further bad news was that I had been receiving the drug and not a placebo. I had further surgery at the end of July 2016 and have just celebrated 1 year NED! I am 58 years old, my wife and three children are very supportive.

Why did you choose to raise funds for MPA specifically?

Because of my lack of knowledge about Melanoma at the time I was diagnosed, I want to help as much as I can to make people aware of how serious this disease is. By donating to MPA I feel I am contributing to help make people aware.

Tell us about your community event.

I decided to do my own DRY JULY after my children suggested I wouldn’t be able to!!

How much did you raise?

The goal was to donate $155, but I had some generous supporters and ended up raising $1040!

Do you have a motto or personal mantra?

Tough times don’t last, tough people do!!

MPA is very grateful to John who raised much needed funds during July 2017.
